Before his journey to Hollywood, Chris Hemsworth filmed 171 episodes (2.5% of the show’s total) of the long-running Australian serial opera Home and Away. Then, he played an unforgettable dead guy George Kirk in the first sequence of the Star Trek remake. That’s pretty much everything we must know about Hemsworth’s life before Thor.

There’s a lot more to Chris Hemsworth than meets the eye. He has all the trappings of an extremely excellent performer in addition to his physical attributes. Hemsworth is a multi-hyphenate force, starring in low-key biopics like Rush and appearing in Hollywood blockbusters like Thor and The Avengers.

As he takes a well-deserved hiatus from performing, now is the ideal moment to reflect on his impressive repertoire and be reminded of his incredible talent. According to IMDb, here are Hemsworth’s most notable films:

  1. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
  2. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
  3. Rush (2013)
  4. The Avengers (2012)
  5. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson
IMDb Rating: 8.4/10
Runtime: 3h 1m
Genre: Superhero

After years of hard effort by countless individuals, “Avengers: Endgame” represents the conclusion of a decade of epic cinema. A dozen plotlines collide in this film, and heroes and villains from over twenty films make cameo appearances. It’s unlike anything Hollywood has ever made before, and it’s there not merely to thank or cash in on the franchise’s devoted audience but to pay back their loyalty and devotion.

At the film’s beginning, Hemsworth’s Thor is not the chiseled warrior we’ve come to know; he’s gained some weight and seems more involved in booze than rescuing the realms. If you’ve seen Infinity War, you know why he’s in such both mental and physical depression. Still, with a little boost from Captain America and his allies, he’ll be fighting like a victor again against Thanos and his fearsome accomplices in no time.

Perhaps the finest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far, this picture belongs in the pantheon of all-time great superhero movies. Hemsworth is just as excellent as he has been in the previous Thor films, and he more than holds his own against the other talented actors and their bold roles in the mission to defeat the finger-snapping opponent. He also did a fantastic job of portraying depression, which heroes aren’t typically seen on the silver screen, which made him sympathetic and accessible to a wide audience.

Writer: Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely
Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson
IMDb Rating: 8.4/10
Runtime: 2h 29m
Genre: Superhero

Even though the two Marvel Studios films, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, are practically inseparable, Hemsworth’s portrayal stands out from the rest of the ensemble.

When looked at separately, “Infinity War” fails to impress. It carefully places all its players on the “Endgame” roster but barely manages to tell a gripping tale. The evident poor camerawork in Gamora’s demise and the luck involved in Thanos’ fated snap rely on the viewer’s association with the characters and the setting. It hurts to acknowledge that it and “Infinity War” are out of balance (as all things should be).

Regarding showcasing Chris Hemsworth’s strengths, “Infinity War” is unparalleled. The Russo Brothers‘ film requires Hemsworth to be a proxy for the viewers and bear the burden of catastrophic risks from the beginning when Thanos (Josh Brolin) squeezes the life out of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to death before his very eyes. This he accomplishes and more. The entrance of Thor on the battleground of Wakanda and his effort to destroy the stone-craving ruler from Titan are two of Marvel’s greatest moments.

It hurts to acknowledge that Endgame and Infinity War aren’t balanced (as all things should be), but at least we have Hemsworth’s performance to praise.

3. Rush (2013)

Director: Ron Howard
Writer: Peter Morgan
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, Pierfrancesco Favino
IMDb Rating: 8.1/10
Runtime: 2h 3m
Genre: Biographical Sports

Ron Howard’s sports picture depicts the off-track conflict between Formula One racers James Hunt (Hemsworth) and Nicki Lauder (Daniel Bruhl). The auto chases are as thrilling as you’d expect, but Hemsworth and Bruhl give outstanding portrayals that are among the finest of their careers.

The film chronicles the 1976 Formula One season and builds to a dramatic conclusion at the rain-soaked Japanese Grand Prix, where one of the two main characters chooses to pull out of the competition. One can now assume the lead and take the victory, but revealing which one would be cheating would disappoint anyone who hasn’t seen this thrilling film.

Most sporting films simply barrel toward a pivotal victory. In “Rush,” the characters question the point of celebrating success and wonder why the sight of a winning racecar is relieving rather than relaxing. Sometimes, it takes seeing other people working hard to reassure us of our own dissatisfaction, goals, and wishes. For this purpose, “Rush” serves as an excellent refresher.

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson
IMDb Rating: 8.0/10
Runtime: 2h 22m
Genre: Superhero

Marvel had the foresight (or business sense) to plot a succession of pictures that would culminate in a mega-superhero extravaganza dubbed “The Avengers.” This majestic team-up of Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (recently introduced Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), all working under the oversight of Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson), has been in the works since 2008’s “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.”

The prequel pictures set the stage so “The Avengers” could skip the backstory and get right to the action.

One of the two most recent movies, “Thor,” sets up the events of “The Avengers.” Loki is sympathetically written because he yearned for his father’s favor, which became his prime motive to pursue power. This time, his desire to be king is so unrestrained that our heroes must curb it before it destroys everything in its path.

Just as today’s audiences enthuse over Star Wars and Indiana Jones, so too will tomorrow’s. While not flawless, “The Avengers” executes its promise and carries considerable weight.

5. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Thor: Ragnarok (Theatrical Version)
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett (Actors)
  • Taika Waititi (Director) - Eric Pearson (Writer) - Kevin Feige (Producer)
  • Dutch, Spanish, English, Finnish, French (Playback Languages)

Director: Taika Waititi
Writer: Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba
IMDb Rating: 7.9/10
Runtime: 2h 10m
Genre: Superhero

Though Thor: Ragnarok is best known for its off-the-wall sense of comedy, it should be made clear that it is also the most revolutionary Marvel film to date. Taika Waititi presents a parable in which two cultures clash and how the only way to move forward is to tear down everything and restart.

Here, the Asgardian crown prince is confined to the planet Sakaar. Fortunately, Thor has the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) on his side to escape the planet and defeat the obviously Evil Goddess Hela (Cate Blanchett) and save Asgard.

Waititi recognizes the duality of emotion that humor can evoke. There is a distinction between cries of fury and shouts of delight, but the picture does not attempt to skirt it. Instead, Waititi seamlessly transitions between emotions through improvised moments and carefully choreographed fight scenes, with Hemsworth shining in both.

The Future of Chris Hemsworth’s Filmography

Chris Hemsworth’s screen time will decrease in the coming years. After discovering his risk for Alzheimer’s disease while shooting his Disney+ series Limitless, the Thor actor says he is taking a hiatus from performing. The Thor star said that the results verified his “biggest fear,” He plans to take “preventative steps.”

Despite this, Hemsworth still has a few features slated, including Extraction 2 and Furiosa (a Mad Max prequel) and a documentary about Hulk Hogan that has yet to be given a title. Concerning his time playing Thor, the actor stated that he would be interested in returning for a concluding picture if the studio gave the persona and universe a fresh perspective.
